Class Descriptions

September 2003

Welcome to the start of a new school year! We are excited about being back in the classroom and are looking forward to a wonderful year. This page is to introduce you to the 6th grade mathematics and science programs at Burgess Elementary School.

Overview of the Mathematics Curriculum

This year students will be studying mathematics from the Connected Mathematics Project materials. The materials are structured into units that take 4 to 6 weeks each. Each unit is focused around problem solving situations that help students to learn an important set of related mathematical ideas and to become skillful at using these ideas to solve problems. The curriculum is structured to help students learn to communicate their strategies and their reasoning so that their mathematical understandings are much deeper. Practice with ideas is provided throughout the units in the Application-Connections-Extensions problems assigned for class work and homework. Our main goal is to help more and more of our student to be successful in and want to continue to study mathematics as they proceed through the grades.

Overview of the Science Curriculum

The Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework is the document that matches the sixth grade science curriculum. The philosophy of learning that best describes our classroom is that students learn best when they are directly engaged with thoughtfully selected scientific phenomena and design problems. Scientific knowledge is rooted in investigation and questioning, and productive inquiry builds on and seeks to extend existing scientific knowledge. The materials and topics selected for this year are grounded in this key concept. The topics we will study are:

Properties of Matter

Heat Energy

These topics are very interesting and will help more students delve into science classes in the future.
