The sixth grade classroom is where children work collaboratively in many of their daily experiences. Connected Math Program, the mathematics series, is based on the "Big Ideas of Mathematics" that develop conceptual understanding. Once students understand how they reason, they develop their strategies. Listening to their ideas is the basis of this class. They are often in the front of the room, communicating solutions to problems. If a child needs help to make the connects, I am there to aid them. It is very exciting when students try to develop a method and extend their ideas. Science is generally a hands on experience, incorporating the same beliefs of how children think.
Curriculum has been given to us by the State of Massachusetts. The materials selected to understand the concepts incorporate experiences that develop awareness of the interconnectedness of the world. As we look at heat energy we also explore climates and their immediate needs. These ideas relate to how we use energy which connects us to today's political agenda and governments. Students will hopefully begin asking for more information from you and me as they extend their thoughts.
Collaboration also means that the children are responsible to contribute their ideas to a partner or group investigating an idea. I am always observing the interactions of the groups; students receive grades that reflect their abilities to make the outcome a success. I am developing students' skills to identify their own strengths and weakness as they assert themselves. All children can learn, all children can make a difference.
